MASS GENERAL LAW CHAPTER 60 SECTION 3C: Any city or town which accepts the provisions of this section or has previously accepted chapter one hundred and ninety-four of the acts of nineteen hundred and eighty-six is hereby authorized, subject to the approval of the commissioner, to design and designate a place on its municipal tax bills or the motor vehicle excise tax bills, or to mail with such tax bills a separate form, whereby the taxpayers of said city or town can voluntarily check off, donate and pledge an amount not less than one dollar or such other designated amount which shall increase the amount otherwise due, and to establish a city or town scholarship fund.

The City of Waltham established a scholarship fund in 1987 to provide financial assistance to eligible Waltham residents for the pursuit of higher education. Contributions to the fund are made through a check-off included with the City's annual tax payments.

A committee of four members reviews the applications and awards are announced in June and distributed at the beginning of the spring semester. For a list of the 2014 Scholarship recipients click here.

  1. How do I contribute to the scholarship fund? - Write in the amount you wish to contribute in the space provided on your annual excise tax bill, add that amount to the amount of your tax due and send one check made payable to the City of Waltham. 
  2. Who can apply for a City of Waltham Scholarship? Any bona fide resident of the City of Waltham.
  3. Does one have to be a college-bound high school senior to be eligible? No. In addition to high school students the eligibility requirements include graduate schools, trade schools and other educational institutions deemed accredited by the scholarship committee.
