How do I read my Water & Sewer Bill?

If there is an “A” next to the current meter reading on your water & sewer bill, this would indicate that the reading was actual.  If your usage is abnormally high, you may have a leak on your property.  Common causes of high water usage are leaky toilets or faulty plumbing fixtures.  The Water Billing Office has available dye tablets that you can utilize to put in the toilet’s water tank to determine if there is a leak.  You can also use a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank.  With the tablets or food coloring, wait about 30 minutes, don’t flush the toilet, and if you see the color seeping into the toilet bowl, this would indicate a leak is occurring in the toilet.  You can repair the toilet with items available at hardware stores or contact a plumber to fix the toilet.

If there is an “E” next to the current meter reading on your water & sewer bill, this would indicate that the reading was estimated.  Since the reading was estimated, the billing system automatically used the reading from the same time frame of the previous year.  Common reasons for having an estimated bill are that the touchpad was inaccessible, touchpad was disconnected from the wiring to the meter or missing altogether, or that the meter is not working properly.  In any of these cases, you should contact the Water Billing Office immediately at (781) 314-3810 to schedule a service appointment to resolve the issue.

If there is an “M” next to the current meter reading on your water & sewer bill, this would indicate that the reading was manually estimated by the Water Billing Staff and adjusted prior to the usage being billed.  This is most likely due to a meter reading issue where the Meter Reader could not obtain a correct reading during the original reading of the route.

An “H” next to your reading means that the reading was adjusted based on the history of notations made on the account.  An “N” indicates that the readings are associated with a new meter which was installed, and an “R” means the reading is associated with a meter that has been replaced.
