New to the City of Waltham? Here is a quick run-down of how trash & recycling operates here in the city:
  • Recycling & trash is collected weekly in Waltham. Containers may be placed curbside one hour before sundown the night before your scheduled pick-up day, or by 7:00am on your scheduled pick-up day. To find your collection day, see here
  • When there is a holiday, trash & recycling pick-up may be DELAYED 1 DAY. Make sure to check our schedule on pg 3 here (new 2024-25 brochure coming soon)
  • You can report missed trash & recycling pick-ups to 781-314-3855.
  • The city provides each household with one blue wheeled recycling cart. To get a new or extra cart, call 781-314-3390 (note: if your cart is broken, call to schedule an appt. for repair. If it cannot be repaired it will be replaced). All recyclables (plastic, glass, paper, cardboard, metal cans) can go into your cart – no separation is necessary. Do not put plastic bags or Styrofoam of any kind in your carts. Plastic bags & Styrofoam go into your trash. All cardboard must be broken down and all recyclables must fit in your cart with the lid fully closed.
  • Trash barrels are the responsibility of the property owner to provide. All household trash MUST be placed in a trash bag, and then placed in a barrel with a lid fully closed. Any trash bags left directly on city streets or sidewalks will not be picked-up. The Health Department enforces proper trash disposal and will issue fines to property owners who to fail to comply.
  • Residents are allowed ONE bulk item per week in addition to their trash barrel. Do not block sidewalks. This includes items such as: Chairs, couches, dressers, humidifiers, etc. Some items require advance scheduling of separate trucks, so please be sure to check here before placing curbside
  • Check out our disposal index for info on how to get rid of various items such as electronics, appliances, hazardous waste, etc
  • Mattresses & textiles are no longer allowed in curbside trash or recycling. See alternative mattress disposal and recycling options here and alternative textile disposal and recycling options here
