Where is my Water Meter and how is it read?

Generally, the water meter is in the basement (or utility closet/storage area) near the water main shut off valve of your home/building.  The meter is normally brass colored and has an odometer style display head or a digital read head.  Also, there is a small black touchpad on the outside of the building which is wired to the water meter.  The Meter Reading Personnel plug their equipment onto the touchpad to obtain a reading from your meter.  Invoices are calculated based on the readings taken at each property.

Some larger water users are on the Automatic Meter Reading Program.  In this case, the water meter usage is transmitted via an MTU (Meter Transmission Unit) through radio signals to a central location.  The water bill is generated directly from the usage provided through this automatic meter reading (AMR) process.
