A reminder that per State of MA rules, mattresses are no longer allowed in curbside trash. Here's what that means for Waltham:

Mattresses are made up almost entirely of recyclable materials. Once disassembled, more than 75% of mattress components can be recycled. As part of Massachusetts' statewide Master Plan to reduce overall waste & disposal 30% by 2030, they have added mattresses to the list of banned disposal materials.

Here's what that means for you:

  • The City has contracted with Green Mattress Co. to assist residents in recycling their mattress and box springs. They aim to recycle up to 95% of each mattress' materials. You can call the Waltham Recycling Department at 781-314-3863 to schedule a pick up date for your mattress or box spring. Mattress pick-up is currently being scheduled a few months out, so residents are advised to PLAN AHEAD and schedule your pick-up well in advance. You may NOT place your mattress or box spring out on the curb UNTIL the day of your scheduled collection.

*NOTE: This service is ONLY available to those with REGULAR CURBSIDE COLLECTION SERVICES. If you live in an apartment or condominium building/complex with more than 6 units, you do NOT have regular curbside collection.

  • You cannot leave mattresses or box springs of any kind out at your curbs UNLESS you have an appointment, and the appointment must be scheduled for THAT DAY. Mattresses must be kept dry and out of the elements in order to be picked-up.

  • If you do NOT have regular curbside collection services, then you are responsible for making your own arrangements to recycle a mattress or box spring. See some options here
