Waltham's Annual Independence Day Celebration!

The City of Waltham, Department of Conservation and Recreation, Mass State Police, and Mayor Jeannette A. McCarthy are pleased to announce this year’s Independence Day Celebrations!

  • Saturday, July 1st: Fireworks will be set off from a barge set up in the Charles River near Moody Street Bridge! Fireworks will begin at dusk on Saturday, July 1st. The Moody Street Bridge (139 Moody Street at the Riverwalk to Moody/Pine Streets) will be closed to vehicular traffic and open to pedestrian traffic only starting at 4PM on Saturday, July 1st. The following are potential viewing areas for the Fireworks Display:
    1. Waltham Common – Carter St side & the Moody St side
    2. Moody St Bridge – premier viewing area
    3. Riverwalk – The northbound portion of the Riverwalk entering from Moody St near stone wall, or southbound portion of the Riverwalk near Margarita’s (access to the Prospect St entrance to the Riverwalk will be denied)
    4. McDevitt School Field – Church St side of the McDevitt School offers a distant view point
    5. Crescent Street Municipal Lot
    6. Walnut Street Municipal Lot
    7. Fitch School
    8. Church Street Municipal Lot
    9. Landry Park – Close to the stone wall near the waterfall

** NOTE: The Charles River will be INACCESSIBLE to recreational boaters between the bridges on Prospect St & Moody St on Saturday, July 1st from 10am-10pm.

Additional things to make note of:

  • Additional street closures will include the current Moody Street plan for outdoor dining/retail. 
  • Please note - Moody Street bridge, Landry Park, and the Riverwalk @ Moody Street will be closed from 3:30pm-5pm to vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and will open to pedestrian traffic ONLY at 4pm.

  • Various food vendors will be on site
  • No contraband or weapons will be allowed. No public drinking allowed. It is strongly recommended that backpacks, coolers and glass containers are not carried for security purposes. Officers will be on detail in uniform as well as plain clothes to ensure a safe and orderly event. 
  • Due to the large noise associated with fireworks, it is recommended you leave your pets at home!
  • Handicap parking will be available in the parking lot adjacent to the Embassy Parking lot.
  • A designated "drop-off" area will be available in the Carter Street parking lot
  • Waltham Police and Fire details will be on site.
  • Should we be rained out, the fireworks celebration will be held on Wednesday, July 5th. Check our website for updates
  • Please note service change to MBTA route 553: Route 553 will be detoured from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM on Saturday, July 1st due to the closure of Moody Street Bridge.
