Lighting Plant 2

The scene of a fire is an inherently dangerous place. During the hours of darkness, when many fires occur, the fire ground becomes even more dangerous to the firefighters because of the lack of visibility. Often successful fire suppression requires attacking the seat of the fire within the building, because of damage to the electrical system or the danger of energized wiring interior power is lost or cut. Firefighters are required to bring portable lights with them. Today most fire department engine and ladder companies are equipped with generators and floodlights and carry portable hand lights, which are sufficient for smaller fires. However in larger incidents the firefighters are committed to rescue and fire suppression and support activities, such as providing exterior and interior lighting is delayed. The Auxiliary Lighting Plant responds on multiple alarms and on request of the deputy fire chief at the fire to provide this support.

The Waltham Auxiliary Fire Department operates Lighting Plant 2. The 1986 FMC/HAHN, formerly Cumberland Hill RI Engine 42, was refurbished by Tri Star Apparatus in Pawtucket RI. This truck carries a 40 kilowatt gasoline generator, 6 - 1500 watt quartz telescoping floodlights. The floodlights are mounted on the truck, it also carries 10 - 1500 watt quarts telescoping floodlights which can be set on stands in the area of the fire or other emergency.  Also carried are 20 hand lights, and related equipment, related electrical equipment and over a mile of electric cable. Other equipment includes four smoke ejectors, ground ladders, portable pumps, assorted hand tools, and six SCBA's.
