PARKING DURING A PARKING BAN:
The Consolidated Public Works Director will call a “snow emergency / parking ban” when Excessive amounts of snow are predicted. All vehicles MUST be removed from all roadways to allow for a better clearing job. Any vehicles left on the road are subject to tow. These emergencies are usually called well in advance of these storms to allow residents plenty of time to make arrangements. Snow Emergencies are broadcast on all major television stations as well as local television and on the City of Waltham web site. They are also sent out to our CodeRED system. It is strongly advised that residents move their vehicles as soon as possible.

The City of Waltham has several municipal & school lots. If you are unable to park in a driveway during a parking ban, you may use ANY Municipal or School parking lot (for the exception of the Public Library lot) & you do not have to pay the meters to park (only applicable when parking ban is in effect). When a parking ban is in place, there is absolutely NO parking on city streets as violators may be subject to tow. You can report illegally parked cars to Public Works at 781-314-3855, or recover a towed car by callin the Waltham, MA Police Department at 781-314-3600. Anyone who chooses to park prior to the announced ban start time must pay for the space if it is still during the enforced hours of Mon-Sat 10am-6pm. You may not move cars into school lots until the end of the school day. The cars can then remain, free of charge, in the same space for the duration of the snow emergency.

After a parking ban is lifted, you will have:
2 HOURS to remove cars from SCHOOL LOTS
24 HOURS to remove cars from MUNICIPAL LOTS

Any cars remaining in school lots at the 2 HOUR MARK from the time the parking ban has been released, will be ticketed or towed. Any cars remaining in municipal lots at the 24 HOUR MARK from the time the parking ban has been released, will be ticketed or towed.

Example:

  • Say a snow emergency is announced starting on a Monday at 12 noon
  • If you park in a municipal lot on Monday at 10am, you would have to pay for the two hours (at $1/hr, or $2 total)
  • Then say the snow emergency is announced to be ending on the Tuesday at 10am
  • That car can remain, free of charge, in that space until the Wednesday at 10am at the latest. By Wednesday 10am, it must have been removed from that parking space.
  • In this instance, cars would need to be removed from school parking lots by Tuesday 12 noon (2 hours after ban is lifted).
