Mattress Recycling Options

As part of Massachusetts' statewide Master Plan to reduce overall waste & disposal 30 percent by 2030, among its strategies for reaching objectives, MassDEP has expanded its current waste disposal bans by adding mattresses to the list of materials banned from disposal or transport for disposal in MA. Per State rules, as of November 1st, 2022, mattresses will no longer be allowed in the trash so they can be recycled

Mattresses are made up almost entirely of recyclable materials. Once disassembled, more than 75% of mattress components can be recycled. Buying a new mattress and wondering what to do with your old one? Some retailers will collect old mattresses for recycling when delivering a new one, so don’t forget to ask! See more on the MA waste disposal bans, and see below for alternative mattress recycling and disposal options.

*NOTE - Mattresses & box springs MUST be kept dry until they go out for pick-up. DO NOT leave mattresses on the sidewalk unless you have an appointment scheduled on that day. No items or material banned by the State of Massachusetts will be picked-up by the trash company.

If you are a resident of Waltham WITH regular CURBSIDE collection:
The city has contracted with Green Mattress Co to assist residents in recycling their mattress and box springs. They aim to recycle up to 95% of each mattress' materials. You can call the Waltham Recycling Department at 781-314-3863 to schedule a pick up date for your mattress or box spring.

If you live in an apartment or condominium building/complex with more than 6 units, you do NOT have regular curbside collection. Each household may recycle up to 6 total units per calendar year (1 mattress OR 1 boxspring = 1 unit). Mattresses must be kept dry and out of the elements in order to be picked-up. Do not place your mattress or box spring out on the curb until the day of your scheduled collection. Mattresses and box springs should be left curbside with house number visible (not behind gates, porches, or in backyards). Leaning against poles, trees, and front walls is best but do not block walkways or driveways. Mattress bags are okay to use. If using a tarp, please make sure drivers can identify it as a mattress. If your pick-up requires leaving mattresses in a location where driver cannot see house number and mattress at the same time, please leave a note during scheduling of pick-up.

If you are a resident of Waltham who does NOT have regular city CURBSIDE collection services:
Meaning you do not have CURBSIDE collection service for trash, recycling and yard waste, then you are responsible for making your own arrangements to recycle a mattress or box spring. If you live in an apartment or condominium building/complex with more than 6 units, you do NOT have regular curbside collection. Here are some disposal options:
