The CDC provided updated guidance regarding masking for the general public today (1/18/22). Key takeaways from this guidance are as follows:

  • CDC recommends that individuals wear the most protective mask that fits well and that an individual will wear consistently
  • It is most important to wear a well fitted mask or respirator correctly that is comfortable and that provides good protection
  • Wearing a highly protective mask or respiratory may be most important for certain higher risk situations or by people at increased risk for severe disease
  • Hierarchy of protection is as follows from HIGHEST to LOWEST:
    • Well-fitting NIOSH-approved respirators including N95s = HIGHEST
    • Well-fitting disposable surgical masks and KN95s
    • Layered finely woven products
    • Loosely woven cloth products = LOWEST
