Waltham Public Library & FWPL: A Year of Black History: The Important Role & History of HBCUs
Welcome to A Year of Black History. Our first speaker will be Dr. LaBrent Chrite, president of Bentley University in Waltham.
Dr. Chrite will provide some insight into the rich and varied history of the Nation’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) while focusing on the myriad of opportunities and challenges they face in the 21st century. This is an especially critical time in the evolution of these iconic institutions – and like many colleges and universities, they are at an inflection point.
As a result of the country’s ongoing racial reckoning, combined with the continued economic and social fallout from the pandemic, HBCUs have been the recent beneficiaries of unparalleled attention and resources (for some). At a time when many higher education institutions in America are struggling for students, many HBCUs are witnessing record levels of enrollment. We’ll discuss what this means for the future of this most critical American resource.
