The Waltham Fire Department Fire Prevention Division's fire and life safety education program reaches middle school aged kids through special summer programs.

WFD Summer Camp with L.E.A.P.

Each Wednesday in the summer, kids from the Waltham Parks and Recreation Leadership Experience Adventure Program (L.E.A.P.) get a chance to learn first hand what it is like to be a firefighter. The Waltham Fire Department provides a rare chance for kids to climb the aerial ladder, rappel down a building from a 3rd floor window, conduct a search and rescue mission through a smokey building, use hoselines to knock target cones out of windows in a multi-story building and compete against teams to push a barrel across a zip line. All these events are designed to teach the campers the teamwork and leadership needed to fight fires and conduct rescue operations.

Each week for an eight week stretch of the summer season, the Department brings through groups of approximately 15 campers for these exciting exercises.

Waltham Fire also works with the Waltham Police Department's summer camp to teach their middle school age participants about the job of a firefighter and essential fire safety skills.  Furthermore, similar to the L.E.A.P. camp, our Waltham Firefighters also teach kids who take part in the Middlesex County Sheriff's summer camp.
