RECYCLING AND TRASH What is the Recycling homepage address? http://www.city.waltham.ma.us/recycling/homerec.html. Or you can Google “Waltham Recycling Department” and it is the first result. Or you can go onto our city’s website and click “Recycling”.

How can I start a recycling program at my business or school? If your business/school is located on a street that already has recycling, then you are eligible for free recycling pickup. You must call the Recycling Department (781-314-3390) and we will call Capitol Waste to register your business/school. If you plan on using a large bin, it must be cleared by Capitol Waste (or you could buy a 96 gal bin from them for $96.00). If you are using a regular small recycling bin that you buy from our office, then you do not need to clear it with them. If you are not located on a street with recycling, then if you still want to have your business/school recycle, you must make the arrangements for a private hauler on your own (for example, Save that Stuff, 617-241-9998).
What can I recycle? Look under “Recycling Calendar” on our homepage. Page two lists what can and cannot be recycled.
What time should my trash and recycling be out by? Ideally, you should put your trash and recycling out by one hour before sunset the day before your trash is scheduled to be picked up. However, the absolute latest is can be put out is by 7:00a.m. the morning of your pickup. What actually happens to my recycling? Good question. After Capitol Waste picks up your recycling, it is brought to the Lynn Transfer Station. From there, it is loaded into bigger trucks and brought to FCR/Casella in Charlestown, Ma. This is the facility which separates the different kinds of recyclables using sorting machines. Once the materials are sorted through, they are baled up (packaged), and then companies can buy them to make new products to sell. What happens to my trash? Once your trash has been collected by Capitol Waste, it is brought to the Lynn Transfer Station. From there, it is reloaded into a larger truck and brought to Covanta SEMASS, which is a combustion facility.
