Job Responsibilities: The purpose of this position is to ensure the safe return, care and handling of all residential animals, enforce all local dog laws, supervise the City animal shelter and ensure the protection of residents against the health and safety risk of domestic and possibly wild animals.  This is accomplished through the knowledge and enforcement of applicable state and local laws.  The position also provides administrative and information support services to City residents.  An Animal Control Officer is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control. Answers and responds to calls from the public by phone or by police department dispatch; investigates complaints and concerns. Captures loose or stray dogs and returns them to their owner or the shelter. Notifies owners of the applicable laws and regulations regarding stray dogs; issues citations as necessary. Examines dogs at shelter to determine health problems; seeks proper veterinary care; maintains daily records on all animals in the shelter.  Determines disposition of each animal to be adopted by new owners or euthanized. Responds to calls regarding wild animals within the City, determines health status; captures and properly euthanizes as necessary. Interviews those who have had contact with the animal to determine if medical treatment is necessary and communicates proper health procedures.  Informs and educates residents on the methods of preventing wildlife problems in their homes and yards. Investigates calls regarding cruelty to animals; resolves problems by educating owners or pursues the complaint in court if necessary.  Prepares reports on all calls and prepares for court appearances. Provides emergency care to injured animals and transports them to proper facilities. Advises the Police and Fire Departments on animal control procedures and changes in applicable laws. Supervises the operation of the City animal shelter; ensures safe conditions and proper care for all housed animals. Conducts animal vaccination clinics for residents. Participates in various safety programs to educate the public on rabies and other issues. Attends training conferences, workshops, and meetings. Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and two years of related college level courses; three to five years of related animal care and handling experience; one year of law enforcement experience; or any combination of education and experience. Animal Control Officer Certification. Firearms safety training. Chemical capture certification training. A valid driver’s license is required. Must successfully pass a Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI), background check, pre-employment physical and drug and alcohol test.

Salary: $51,386.00 includes excellent benefits
