Fire Training

Waltham Fire Dept. LogoTraining Facilities

The Waltham Fire Department maintains several training facilities where firefighters can practice the skills needed to perform firefighting and rescue techniques while also reviewing and learning new procedures.  Our facilities include:

  • The Drill Tower behind Central Station where companies practice the latest firefighting, ladder, search and rescue, SCBA and rope rescue techniques.  New equipment is also put to the test here before entering service on the front lines.
  • The Drill Yard behind Central Station surrounding the drill tower is also used for vehicle extrication evolutions, technical rescue exercises, hose operations and water supply training.
  • The 9-1-1 Training Center Classroom includes audio and visual equipment used to support instructor presentations.

The Training Division also makes use of various locations throughout the city for practical evolutions.  This includes the Charles River, Hardy Pond and the Cambridge Reservior for water and ice rescue.  The Fire Training and Fire Prevention Divisions also work together to identify buildings set for demolition and secure permission to use these structures for search and rescue, forcible entry and ventilation training.  Virtually any area in the city can be used to create realistic scenarios to which firefighters must respond.
