Why would I need to pull a permit?
If you are doing any of the following:

  • New construction, new business, or any alterations to a building.
  • Any plumbing, heating or gas work.
  • Putting up a sign on new or existing business.
  • Installing vinyl siding on your house, a new roof, or replacement windows.

What do I need to pull a permit?
For a new commercial construction, three sets of building plans must be stamped by a registered architect or engineer and a plot plan must be stamped by a registered land surveyor. For new residential construction, three sets of building plans and a plot plan stamped by a registered land surveyor. For alterations, you need three sets of building plans. Vinyl siding and roof permits consist of filling out a short application. Plans must be reviewed and approved by the Fire Prevention prior to filing with the Building Department.

Who can take out a permit?

  • The owner of a property where work is being done.
  • A licensed contractor.
  • A licensed plumber or gas fitter.

How much does a permit cost?
A Commercial Building Permit is $22.00 per Thousand ($1000) and a Residential Building Permit is $12.00 per Thousand ($1000).

Plumbing and Gas Permit fees are as follows - Residential Plumbing is $25.00 for the first 5 fixtures and $5.00 for each additional fixture, Gas Residential is $25.00 for the first fixture and $5.00 for each additional fixture, Commercial Plumbing $25.00 for the first 5 fixtures and $15.00 for each additional fixture, Commercial Gas $25.00 for the first fixture and $15.00 for each additional fixture.

How long does a permit last?
The permit is expired if it is abandoned six months after date of filing. A permit can also be extended for one or more extensions not exceeding ninety days each.

What kind of records does the Building Department have?
We have property files, permit records and building plans dating back to 1894. We also have copies of state and city zoning ordinances and by-laws. All documents and records are available to the public, with some exceptions pertaining to investigative materials under legal review.
