RECREATION AREAS AND FACILITIES

Permit information and availability of fields may vary from season to season. 
Please contact the Recreation Department for specific days and times of interest.

CEDARWOOD PLAYGROUND
7.0 Acres Location: 25 Intervale Road, behind Brandeis University
Neighborhood playground with large childrens play area and basketball court.  Open grass area for recreational sports and games.  Area also has acres of undeveloped natural woodlands.  Accessible walkway with on street parking.

Time available to the public:
Year round - dawn to dusk.  Annual Neighborhood Association reserves park to host neighborhood gathering in June each year. 

 
BOBBY CONNORS PLAYGROUND
2.98 Acres Location: 20 Sunnyside St., corner of South St
Dedicated the Bobby Connors Playground in June 2001 (formally known as Roberts Playground).  Neighborhood park with large childrens play area, basketball court, and small baseball/softball field.  Small athletic baseball/softball field is restricted to youth groups and for recreational co-ed adult softball. 

Time available to the public:
Facilities are open year round dawn to dusk. 

 
DRAKE PLAYGROUND
2.16 Acres Location: 3 Hazel Street, across from Plympton Elementary School
Plympton Elementary School's outdoor play area.  Neighborhood park which includes childrens play structure, basketball court, youth athletic field for baseball/softball, and water spray facility. 

Time available to the public:
Year round, dawn to dusk, during non school hours
Spray park facility - Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 - 3:00 p.m. and
Sunday 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. late June - late August

 
JAMES P. FALZONE MEMORIAL PARK
10.54 Acres Location: 901 Trapelo Road, across from Our Lady's Church/School
Large natural turf soccer field with parking lot.  Home to Waltham Youth Soccer Association.

Spring/Fall: Waltham Youth Soccer

Time available to the public:
Weekdays until 4:00 p.m. 
Summer availability end of June through end of August. 

 
PETER GILMORE PLAYGROUND
1.35 Acres Location: 90 Hall Street, corner of High Street
Small neighborhood park with childrens play area including two play structures with swings and three (3) lighted basketball courts.

Time available to the public:
No permits required to use facilities.  Year round, dawn to dusk.  Night lighting at basketball court area mid May though mid September, until 10:00 p.m.

 
GRAVERSON PLAYGROUND
4.44 Acres Location: 16 Pine Vale Rd; corner of Trapelo Rd
Neighborhood park with lighted basketball court, two (2) lighted tennis courts, small soccer field, little league baseball diamond and small parking area.  Baseball field utilized by North Waltham Baseball League during the spring/summer months.   

Permits issued - reserving specified field(s)/facilities:
Spring/Summer: North Waltham Baseball, April - August; Waltham High School (Tennis) March - June

Time available to the public:
With the exception of the baseball field and tennis courts as noted above all other facilities are open dawn to dusk, year round.  Tennis and Basketball courts are lit until 10:00 p.m. mid May through mid September.

 
HILLCROFT PLAYGROUND
2.42 Acres Location: 25 Hillcroft Rd, off Forest St.
Small neighborhood playground area with 1/2 basketball court.

Year round, dawn to dusk

 
"JACK" KOUTOUJIAN PLAYGROUND
11.09 Acres Location: 901 Moody St, beside Burger King Restaurant
Dedicated the Jack Koutoujian Playground in the Fall of 1997 (formally known as the Moody Street Playground). Small athletic field, basketball court, play structure, and skate park.  Major improvements to entire site in 1999 and 2000 including  skate park opening in the Fall of 2000. Athletic field is restricted to little league baseball or youth softball.

No permits currently issued to reserve facilities.

Time available to the public:
Facilities are open year round, dawn to dusk.

 
LAZAZZERO PLAYGROUND
4.30 Acres Location: 7 Shore Road, corner of Lake St, beside Hardy Pond
Neighborhood park abutting Hardy Pond with lighted basketball court, spray park, and (2) little league baseball fields. Baseball fields are the home fields for North Waltham Baseball League running programs spring/summer months.  Water spray park opened summer of 2008.

Spring/Summer: North Waltham Baseball, April - August

Time available to the public:
With the exception of little league use, and summer season of water park, all other facilities are open to the public dawn to dusk.

Sunday 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. late June through late August

 
LOGAN PARK
.45 Acres Location: 120 Woerd Ave
Newly renovated neighborhood park with childrens play equipment, swings, picnic tables and green space. 
Time available to the public:
Open dawn to dusk, year round.
 
LOWELL FIELD
5.35 Acres Location: 190 Grove St., corner of Willow Street
Community recreational facility for soccer, softball, basketball, tennis, walking path, water spray facility with parking areasPark improvements made 1997 through 2002.  Waltham's first water spray park opened in July of 2002.  Softball field utilized by Girls Softball Program; Recreation Department sponsored afterschool programs are held throughout the year at this regional facility.

Spring/Summer:  Girls Softball, June - August; Waltham Recreation Dept.
Summer: Adult recreational programs reserving field week nights, June - August

Spray park facility - Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 - 3:00 p.m. and
Sunday 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. late June - late August
Basketball court/tennis courts are lit until 10:00 p.m.; mid May through mid September

 
MSGR. MCCABE/WARRENDALE PLAYGROUND
4.86 Acres Location: 90 Charlotte Road, behind Fitzgerald Elementary School
Fitzgerald Elementary School's outdoor play area.  Neighborhood park with (2) little league baseball fields, basketball court, (2) lighted tennis courts, large play structures, water spray park, and parking.  Baseball fields are home fields for Waltham's Warrendale Little League during the spring/summer monthsRenovations to basketball and tennis courts, play structures, fencing, spectator bleachers, landscaping, parking, and newly constructed water spray park completed in 2009.

MCDONALD PLAYGROUND
.67 Acres Location: 8 Cutter St., corner of Newton Street
Small neighborhood park with playground area, spray park facility and multi basketball courts. Major improvements to recreational facilities occurred from 2000-2003.    

Time available to the public:
Year round, dawn to dusk
Spray park facility - Monday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 - 3:00 p.m. and
Sunday 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. late June - late August

 
MCKENNA PLAYGROUND
3.15 Acres Location: 10 Whitcomb Street, off Elm Street
Neighborhood playground with lighted major league baseball field home of Waltham Babe Ruth League.  Utilized by Waltham High School and Babe Ruth League during spring/summer months.   Area also has (2) lighted basketball courts, batting cage, small childrens play structure and parking areaRenovations to facilities were completed in 2008.

Spring/Summer  Waltham High School, April - June; Babe Ruth League, April - September

Time available to the public:
With the exception of permits for the baseball field, all other facilities are open year round, dawn to dusk.  Lighted basketball court is open until 10:00 p.m. mid May through mid September.

 
NIPPER MAHER PARK
18.50 Acres Location: 65 Dartmouth Street, off South Street
Community recreational facility complete consisting of baseball fields, basketball court, tennis courts, children's play area with parking areas.  Baseball fields utilized by Waltham High School baseball teams, adult baseball league and home to Connie Mack baseball league (ages 16- 19) during the spring/summer months.  Little league fields are home fields for Waltham Little Nippers Baseball League during the spring/summer months.   Onsite is a small maintenance garage, public restrooms open during baseball season, and (2) concession stand/press box buildings.  Ongoing capital improvements to facilities since 2002. Final phase of improvements scheduled for 2010.

POND END TOT LOT
1.42 Acres Location: 93 Winter Street, corner of Pond End School Lane
Small neighborhood park with limited playground equipment for young children.

Time available to the public:
Dawn to dusk, year round.

 
PROSPECT HILL PARK
252.22 Acres Location: North Entrance: 314 Totten Pond Road
South Entrance: Prospect Hill Road
Regional community park of natural woodlands with over 250 acres of undeveloped land.  Park includes picnic sites, walking trails and scenic vistas of Boston's skyline and mountains in the west.  Base area includes: Administration Offices for the Recreation Office, Recreation Program Building (former Ski Lodge), picnic area and children's playground.  Prospect Hill Park Advocacy Group established in 1993 in support of protecting the environment.  A 10 year master plan was developed for PHP in 1998.  Capital projects continue with hopes of constructing a restroom facility in 2010.

Picnic permits to reserve picnic sites within the park - May through October

Picnic permits available to reserve a picnic site, otherwise picnic areas available on a first-come first-serve basis.  Vehicle access road closed November though March.  Foot traffic allowed year round dawn to dusk. 

 
ELSIE TURNER FIELD
6.00 Acres Location: 421 Trapelo Road, across from Federal Records Center
Youth size softball field with small parking area.  If the City's plan to construct a (9) hole golf course on abutting City property, the field would be incorporated into that future project.

THOMPSON PLAYGROUND
Location: 95 Charles Street
Small neighborhood playground area with multi-basketball court area, childrens play structure and water spray elements.  Renovations to the entire playground completed in 2005 with newly added water spray elements.

Year round, dawn to dusk
Spray Park: June - Aug: Monday - Friday 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Saturday's 10:00 - 3:00 p.m. Sunday's 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. late June - late August
 
VETERANS MEMORIAL ATHLETIC FIELD COMPLEX
25 Acres Location: 385 Forest Street
Newly constructed sports complex consisting of (4) synthetic multi purpose field and (2) natural turf softball fields.  Fields opened in 2005 and 2006.  Fieldhouse building constructed in 2008 and opened in 2009. Facility includes parking for 250 vehicles and walking loop around perimeter of fields.  Field use schedules are posted on kiosk in front of Fieldhouse building.  Athletic fields used primarily for Waltham High School athletic teams, Waltham youth sport organizations and Gann Academy.  Facility is opened late March through November.  Facility is closed during the winter season.   

Permits are required to use fields by organized groups
Availability for varying days and times maybe limited throughout the seasons.

Time available to the public:
Most mornings the facility is available to general public.  Vehicle access closed December through March.

VETERANS MEMORIAL SKATING RINK
Location: 295 Totten Pond Road
Leased from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts's DCR (Department of Conservation and Recreation) Veterans Memorial Rink is open Mid September through Mid April.  Ice is utilized Waltham High School , local youth hockey association, Bentley University, and local adult hockey groups, and other private organizations.  Public Skating and Stick and Puck hours are scheduled throughout the winter months. 
 
CORNELIA WARREN FIELD
4.84 Acres Location: 210 Waverley Oaks Road, at the corner of Beaver Street
Multi-purpose lighted athletic field for adult softball and youth football.  Utilized by adult softball league during the spring/summer months and practice field for Waltham Pop Warner Football from August through November.  Field is also utilized for numerous charitable organizations for fund raising events.

Fall:  Pop Warner Football, August - November
Spring/Summer: Men's Adult Softball, May - September

Time available to the public:
Weekdays prior to times of permits, Saturday and Sundays.

14.99 Acres Location: Along Forest Street
  Natural woodlands between Patriot's Trail Girl Scouts facility and the Gann Academy.

11.80 Acres Location: Entrance accessible along Beaver Street or through Patriots Trail/Girl Scout Property
